Evil Martians is an international, fully remote company headquartered in New York. We’ve been working remotely for over 15 years.

### Requirements

- A focus on designing complex, professional UIs. We specialize in [developer tools](https://evilmartians.com/services/design-developer-tool) and other professional software, so we’ll ask you to show at least two non-consumer products you’ve designed.
- A broad understanding of [UX patterns](https://evilmartians.com/chronicles/devs-in-mind-how-to-design-interfaces-for-developer-tools) and when to apply them.
- Experience building flexible [design systems](https://evilmartians.com/chronicles/building-a-design-system-specced-for-engineers-and-agents) from scratch, as well as working with existing ones such as shadcn/ui.
- A strong eye for [visual design](https://evilmartians.com/chronicles/how-to-make-absolutely-any-app-look-like-a-macos-app).
- Strong English communication skills and the ability to collaborate effectively with both clients and developers.
- [Ownership mindset](https://evilmartians.com/chronicles/hiring-a-product-designer-1-hard-skill-and-3-soft-skills-to-look-for#soft-skill-2-taking-ownership-of-the-product). You’re comfortable working independently, managing priorities asynchronously, and figuring out what needs to be done without relying on a predefined backlog.
- Experience using AI tools to [prototype](https://evilmartians.com/chronicles/mvps-prototypes-results-how-to-win-with-a-martian-design-sprint), build, and ship ideas quickly.
- Ability to work within European or US business hours with at least a 3-hour overlap with Pacific day time.

### Nice-to-haves

- Experience with analytics—formulating product hypotheses, setting metrics, and analyzing user behavior to measure outcomes.
- Engineering skills. While coding expertise is a big plus, even basic knowledge of HTML, CSS, and JavaScript would be a bonus. Most Martians, including founders, managers, and designers, can code.
- In-depth understanding of AI, beyond just using it.
- Data visualization skills, and familiarity with Edward Tufte’s work.
- Interest in the startup world, with [an MVP mindset](/chronicles/one-does-not-simply-design-designers-as-product-owners). Experience launching your own products is a bonus.

### How to apply

Please send an email to [obey-design@evilmartians.com](mailto:obey-design@evilmartians.com?subject=Your%20Name%20|%20Product%20Designer) with your name and the subject line “Product Designer.”

In your email:

- Tell us about at least two professional UIs you’ve worked on. Briefly describe the initial task, how you approached it, and the result you created—explaining why you believed it was the best solution. Include links or attach PNGs to showcase your designs.
- Tell us about yourself and your journey as a product designer.
- Don’t lean on AI to write the reply for you. It’s obvious, and it spoils the first impression. If you did use AI to help, review it closely before hitting send; we can tell.

### What happens next?

1. We’ll review your application and ask a few follow-up questions.
2. We’ll arrange a Zoom interview (#1).
3. (Optional) You may be given a take-home test, which should take 1-2 hours.
4. (Optional) We’ll ask questions about your take-home test results.
5. Finally, we’ll arrange a Zoom interview (#2) with the CEO of Evil Martians.
